Harwich Mayflower is proud to announce it is working in partnership with Tendring District Council (TDC) to complete 14 new art murals.
It is part of a project to recognise and reflect the maritime and historic character of the town - as well as the surrounding areas.
The project will be called ‘Art Of Harwich’ and is being backed by £7,400 from Tendring’s Big Society Fund.
Tom Daly, Chairman of the Charity, said: ‘We (Harwich Mayflower Project) have already completed six murals which are mounted on the outer perimeter wall. They have been a great success. The murals have all generated excellent, positive feedback from all who have seen them’.
Harwich Mayflower Project is developing a series of new courses and projects which are all aimed at boosting vocational skills and provide a more stimulating streetscape for people living in, or visiting, Harwich.
The murals will be researched, developed and painted by the volunteers who wish to participate. The work will be carried out under the artistic supervision of tutor Stephanie Struth.
Alan Goggin, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Transformation (Pictured below), said he is very excited by the murals scheme.
‘This new artwork will certainly have a major impact and I am sure that it will prove very popular with both residents and visitors alike,’ he said.
‘We are delighted to be able to support the scheme and hope that it is a huge success with many volunteers getting involved. It sounds like a great community initiative.
‘It is all part of Tendring recognising the value of Harwich and its attraction as a tourist destination.’
Paul Cruddas, Mayflower Project’s Training Manager, commented: ‘We cannot wait to get volunteers involved in these artworks and would ask anyone who might be interested to contact us immediately.
Anyone interest should the project’s training centre in the old Harwich Town Train Station building on 01255 318289 or by emailing [email protected].
‘We are extremely happy that TDC has recognised how important this art project could be and agreed to provide funding for it,’ added Mr Cruddas.
