The Harwich Mayflower Project.

We are proud to present a exciting new project based in Harwich, Essex to construct a full size sea-going replica of the Pilgrim Fathers' vessel, The Mayflower. The construction and operation of the ship will provide a focus for visitors to the region and consolidate the historic links between England, the Netherlands and the USA - thus generated by the original vessel, which was based in Harwich. On completion in 2014, the vessel will re-enact her voyage of 1620 to New England and will continue to trade internationally throughout her life. This is a substantial undertaking which is already under-way and the vessel’s construction in Harwich will preserve ancient shipwright skills and assist the rejuvenation of the town through apprenticeships and job creation.

The vessel’s future voyages will  offer seagoing training for the underprivileged young living along her original trading route to the USA, as well as fostering better international understanding between Europe and the New World. During the construction of the Mayflower replica we plan to re-educate visitors and local citizens in construction techniques of wooden sailing ships as used in the 17th century and thereafte - set in the context of one of the most interesting historic towns in England.

It is also intended that Harwich is re- established as a maritime centre with the emphasis on a fleet of historic vessels. Education will be provided not just through vessel construction but modern environmental techniques regarding the sustainability of woodland to replace the English oak to be used in vessel construction. The Project has already planted in excess of 100 broad leafed trees to more than replace those felled for the Project. When complete, the vessel will be opened to the public, wherever she is, for the benefit of the communities she visits.
